Getting started
- Select the display you want to capture.
- Choose Full Display or draw a Custom Area.
- Choose video quality, audio source and optional webcam overlay.
- Select Start Recording and choose the destination MP4.
- When finished, stop recording from ScreenForge or use ⇧⌘R.
Screen recording permission
If ScreenForge reports that permission is missing, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, enable ScreenForge, then quit and reopen the app if macOS requests it.
ScreenForge displays the current permission state in the sidebar and can open the relevant System Settings pane directly.
Microphone permission
Microphone access is requested only when you choose Microphone or Mac + Microphone. Manage it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
Camera permission
Camera access is requested only when Include webcam is enabled. Manage it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
Recording questions
Why is “Highlight clicks” unavailable?
Click highlighting depends on cursor capture. Turn on Show cursor first.
Can ScreenForge stay out of the recording?
Yes. Keep “Exclude ScreenForge window” enabled. You can also exclude ScreenForge’s own audio independently.
Which quality should I use?
High is a strong default for tutorials and demos. Ultra favors maximum detail, Medium reduces file size, and Low is useful for quick drafts.
Can I record only part of the screen?
Yes. Select Custom Area, draw the region and confirm it. ScreenForge maps the logical selection to Retina output pixels.
Editing and export
Open an MP4 or QuickTime movie to trim, crop or choose Original, 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 or 9:16. ScreenForge preserves the source frame rate and compatible audio tracks during export.
If no edits are applied to a compatible MP4, ScreenForge creates a validated byte-for-byte copy rather than applying a lossy re-encode. It will not allow the source video to be selected as its own output.
